Inspired the book \u201cWhat I talk about when I talk about running\u201d by Haruki Murakami whose hobby I share, for some time now I have been thinking about writing down those thoughts that come to mind while I\u2019m running. This activity, which I have been carrying out quite regularly over the last few months, has the advantage of allowing thoughts to flow, and many times those that come up try to explain what I do. I would like to share one that has popped up in my head as a kind of justification: perseverance.<\/p>\n
Like everyone else, the first thing I did after refle<\/p>\n
cting on this topic, was to look for its exact definition in the official dictionary of cyberspace, Wikipedia. According to the Wiki (and Christianity), perseverance is the virtue that makes us do whatever is necessary to reach the goals we have set ourselves, in spite of obstacles or decreased personal motivation over time. Perseverance supports work with willpower and continuous effort to reach our goal.<\/p>\n
Well, whether you consider it a virtue or an attitude in life, what I have been able to confirm is that it is a valuable tool many of us are forced to resort to in order to achieve our goals. A tool without which we would not be able to convince ourselves that those goals are possible, or that we can achieve them, and which makes the path to achieving them more important than the goal itself.<\/p>\n
In recent years you will have noticed that one of our favourite buzzwords is talent. In the speech Mario Vargas Llosa delivered at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, he subtly related talent with perseverance, leading us to a conclusion that is beginning to take root: work and perseverance are the best ways of provoking talent.<\/strong> However, we naturally relate perseverance to effort, to suffering\u2026<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Perseverance, talent, effort, suffering\u2026 All of these words out of context may sound like evangelical rhetoric that can sometimes clash with younger people, believe me, I understand you.<\/p>\n What I have confirmed based on experience is that anything achieved with effort, is more lasting in our memory, it shapes our character, the way we behave, our ability to face life. In academic terms, it empowers us to achieve goals, which we often consider unattainable.
